"Crowdsourcing is an extrapolation of OI in which you throw out a challenge to a group of people that you may or may not know and solicit their ideas and solutions for your issue", writes speaker and lateral thinker Paul Sloane, in the introduction to his collaborative, multi-author anthology A Guide to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing: Advice From Leading Experts. The editor provides a series of insightful and thought provoking essays from many of the thought leaders in the fields of open innovation (OI) and crowdsourcing.

Paul Sloane has brought together an impressive array of experts in the fields of open innovation and crowdsourcing. The concept of open innovation, where new and valuable ideas come from outside the organization, is growing as more CEOs embrace the principle of collaboration. The realization that closed innovation, where only in house ideas are utilized, is limiting has entered the boardrooms of the most forward thinking innovation driven companies. In a globalized economy, fresh thinking and creative solutions can arrive from anywhere in the world, and in forms previously not considered by business leaders. The addition of crowdsourcing to toolbox of open innovation provides an extra dimension for unexpected and even serendipitous creativity.

Paul Sloane (photo left) has pulled together many leading writers, in this treasure trove of ideas, who offer tremendous depth and diverse opinion to the concepts of open innovation and crowdsourcing. The well written and multi-faceted essays cover the areas of:

* What is open innovation and what are its risks and rewards
* The various types of OI and how to choose the right one
* What is crowdsourcing and how and when should it be used
* Other business experiences with OI and crowdsourcing
* How to start using OI and how to measure results
* How to integrate or change company culture to one of OI
* How to select people and build teams suited to OI

For me, the power of the book is how Paul Sloane has created a collection of highly informative articles, written by thought leaders in the growing field of open innovation, that cover all of the critical aspects of the topic. The essays not only describe why open innovation is essential to the modern organization, but also how to implement OI and crowdsourcing effectively to achieve maximum benefit. The over thirty authors cover the areas of why OI is important, how to apply the principles, the effect on people inside and outside the organization, gaining collaboration, how to get new crowdsourced ideas approved, the legal and intellectual property dimensions, and the future of open innovation. Overall, this book is an excellent source of information and practical ideas for utilizing open innovation and crowdsourcing principles in any organization.

I highly recommend the comprehensive and highly informative book A Guide to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing: Advice From Leading Experts edited by Paul Sloane, to anyone seeking a richer understanding of the fascinating and rapidly growing fields of open innovation and crowdsourcing. These exciting new trends are the talk of cutting edge business leaders everywhere, and the essays in this book provide the tools and principles necessary for any company to become open innovation powerhouses.

Read the important and destined to become classic book A Guide to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing: Advice From Leading Experts edited by Paul Sloane, and put the powerful concepts of open innovation and crowdsourcing to work in your organization. The authors in this fine anthology demonstrate how to utilize the leading edge principles the right way, to achieve maximum benefit for all stakeholders. You will never go back to the outdated idea of closed innovation again.

Elements of Influence by Terry R. Bacon - Book review

Elements of Influence

The Art of Getting Others to Follow Your Lead

By: Terry R. Bacon, Ph.D.

Published: July 15, 2011
Format: Hardcover, 287 pages
ISBN-10: 0814417329
ISBN-13: 978-0814417324
Publisher: AMACOM

"Influence is part of nearly every communication and occurs in virtually every human interaction.Influence is crucial to business, too. It is so fundamental to leadership that there could be no leadership without it", writes thought leader, coach, and consultant to global companies, Terry R. Bacon, Ph.D., in his brilliant and insightful book Elements of Influence: The Art of Getting Others to Follow Your Lead. The author describes the important features that make influence, both ethical and unethical, so critical to understand for both organizational leaders and followers.

Terry Bacon makes the important point that everyone uses influence at various times in both their personal and professional lives. Terry Bacon also provides the valuable idea that influence is not simply the domain of the rich and powerful, but is a skill that can be learned like any other. The author shares the essential techniques for improving an individual's skills in exerting influence. The author draws upon decades of research to uncover the true purpose and meaning of influence. Terry Bacon goes straight to the core of what influencers seek from the people who they want to influence. The author then provides the crucial results of that act of influencing others, both positively and negatively, and how those outcomes relate to effective leadership.

Terry R. Bacon (photo left) recognizes that influence is more of an ongoing process than a one time event. Even in short term interactions, the essential elements remain the same. The influencer must be clear in the expected goals for the influence, and know what they want from the person being influenced in the matter. A successful outcome would result in compliance on the part of the person being influenced by the influencer. A more firm outcome would be in the form of a commitment on the part of the influencee. The end result of these achievements on the part of the influencer is leadership. Should the influencer fail in the leadership attempt, the results could be a skeptical or resistant influencee. The influencee could even enter into complete rebellion against the failed influence of the leader. To prevent these negative outcomes, and to work toward more positive results for the leader,Terry Bacon provides the tools necessary to overcome the potential for bad results.

For me, the power of the book is how Terry Bacon combines a strong theoretical framework for the concept of influence with very practical techniques for improving personal influence. The author strengthens his outline of influence through the backing of decades of research and study into the topic. Terry Bacon ties the principles of influence into the important issue of leadership effectively, giving the book an overall outline and purpose.

The author also makes an important and necessary query into the dark side of influence, where influence crosses into the more more sinister form of manipulation. By not shying away from both the dark side of influence, as well as examining the results of failed attempts at influencing others, Terry Bacon creates a much stronger book. Through a deeper understanding of the potential problems of influence and a failure of ethics, the author can then shed more light on the positive and more ethical side of influence and its importance for effective leadership.

I highly recommend the essential and research based book Elements of Influence: The Art of Getting Others to Follow Your Lead by Terry R. Bacon, Ph.D., to anyone seeking a comprehensive study of the principles of influence combined with a step by step process for learning the techniques of becoming an effective and ethical influencer. This book provides the methodology for utilizing influence in the right way to build strong and ethical leadership, while offering information about how to counter and avoid using the manipulative methods of influence's darker side.

Read the groundbreaking and information filled book Elements of Influence: The Art of Getting Others to Follow Your Lead by Terry R. Bacon, Ph.D., and discover the importance of influence in people's business and personal lives. This book contains the techniques for learning and developing the skills necessary to become an ethical influencer of others, and a better and more effective leader in all areas of your life.

For the author, creative thinking is simply another aspect of being human. Todd Henry provides advice and structure for people in traditionally creative positions and industries. At the same time, the author shares strategies for people in supposedly non-creative roles and industries to demonstrate innovative brilliance any time that the need arises in their jobs. To achieve this creativity on demand skill, the author offers techniques to be trained and prepared for the purpose of creative thinking and innovation.

"Rather than obsessing over textbook concepts like inventory turns or the cost of goods sold, all I had to do was think about how to make our customers think good things about us. That customer sentiment would be the determining factor in whether we would ultimately be successful or not", writes entrepreneur, speaker, customer service expert, and Founder and President of Zane's Cycles, Chris Zane, in his business transformational and customer satisfaction building book Reinventing the Wheel: The Science of Creating Lifetime Customers. The author describes how the real objective of any business is not selling products or services, but is rather about selling customer experiences.

Chris Zane understands that the real competitive advantage for a business is creating a superior customer experience through providing the finest customer service imaginable. While many business people concentrate on having the lowest prices, cutting costs, and other complex aspects of business operations, Chris Zane offers over the top customer service as the true difference maker. To achieve the greatest customer service, and the resulting lifelong customer value and referral benefits, the business person must first determine the real nature of their product and service line. For Chris Zane, simply selling a product is not what the customer is buying. In the view of the customer, they are purchasing a good experience. By changing the focus to that of what the customer values, a company will become more successful in every way.

Chris Zane (photo left) doesn't simply believe in meeting the expectations of the customer. Instead, he supports over-exceeding even the highest ideals of the customer. The shift in thinking from selling, and placing the emphasis on building trusting customer relationships, Chris Zane runs counter to the standard business concept of maximizing short term profits. Instead, by providing a strong wow factor, Chris Zane provides evidence that the business will benefit many times over in the long term. A few of Chris Zane's business practices offer that wow factor to customers:

* Find the emotional connection to the customer
* End nickel and diming customers for every service
* Walk the walk and stand by your word and policies
* Trade in, trade up where customers have the opportunity to trade up
* Build unconditional trusting relationships with customers
* Expand the circle of customers
* Become involved in the community
* Become a leader in environmental causes

For me, the power of the book is how Chris Zane combines his strong theoretical concepts for creating superior customer experiences with his real world experience with his cycling shop business. The author not only suggests values and ideals, but lives them as well. Very often, business people will champion customer service as a key source of competitive advantage, but will fail to follow through on that promise. Chris Zane not only talks the talk, but rides that bike as well.

This book could just as easily be considered a treatise on the lifetime, and even inter-generational value of building and strengthening trusting customer relationships. There is much literature, and many books about customer relationships as key to long term success, but this book offers real life examples and proof of the power and sheer joy of those same relationships. This gem of a book is a treat for anyone who believes strongly in relationship and trust building as the basic foundations of business success.

I highly recommend the customer relationship focused book Reinventing the Wheel: The Science of Creating Lifetime Customers by Chris Zane, to anyone seeking a practical, and hands on approach to developing lifelong, trust filled customer relationships built on over-delivery of the best possible customer service. Anyone can meet the expectations of a customer. Chris Zane demonstrates the courage to go far beyond those expectations, and creating the ultimate service based industry, through a clear understanding of knowing the true reason for the company's very existence.

Read the essential and indispensable customer service book Reinventing the Wheel: The Science of Creating Lifetime Customers by Chris Zane, and discover the value of understanding your company's real purpose, how to establish and continually improve superior customer service, and the lifetime value and mutual benefit of trusting lifelong customer relationships. This book will change the very way that you do business in your company.
